My friend is far away and all I can send are letters. Snail mail. Is it okay to send letters with old photos and just include a short note of what the photo is about? One photo, one short note at a time. And to whoever is going to read the memory to him, a background story to help continue the story a bit?

When she mentions seeing the black labrador, (which she didn't) it triggered a memory regarding a past ownership in the patient. It meant a little conversation, but also that the staff member had to tell a white lie to get it. My dad had dementia, and was finally in a care facility. The staff there said he wouldn't drink his water, and they did not have time to mollycoddle. When I visited and said to Dad "Do you want to drink your water?", he wouldn't. When I said "Drink your water Dad it's got vitamins in it (whte lie) he'd immediately pick it up and drink. It's hard though when you weren't used to fibbing to your dad in the first place, but it was the only thing which worked.

*CAREGIVERS ASK:* *"When am I supposed to put them in a headlock?"* *"How much do baby-gates help?"* *"I hear 3 inch long deck screws can be a game changer! Which door should I apply them to first?"* *"It is true that a reliable babysitter is 'Murder, She Wrote' or is 'Golden Girls' better?"* *Yes, humor can be a great stress reliever. Don't take things personal. I know it's easier said than done not to get offended but it helps me to remember that like a feverish disease, I wouldn't get ticked off at someone for running a fever. So too, just remember they have little to no control over themselves and become more and more selfish like a child/baby. And don't joke directly with the afflicted one. Save your comedy for a confidant later after you vent and cry a bit. Peace be with all us caregivers.*
